Survey Cites Anchorage Airport as Continent’s Second Best

March 20th, 2010 ~ No Comments

JUNEAU, ALASKA – A recently released Air Cargo World magazine survey ranked Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport as North America’s second top aviation cargo facility.

Performance, value, facilities and operations were evaluated to determine the airport’s ranking. The Anchorage airport was nine points behind Memphis, Tenn.

The airport is nearing completion of a multi-year project to allow it to handle the largest cargo aircraft in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards. Runways and taxiways have been widened and strengthened to accommodate Airbus A-380 and Boeing 747-8 aircraft. Additionally, the airport recently modified many of its cargo parking spots to accommodate these larger aircraft. Anchorage’s flow-through parking locations provide the utmost in convenience for the cargo carriers.

“This is truly the result of a total team effort,” said Leo von Scheben, Commissioner, Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. “The airport provides the infrastructure. The ground handling companies and fueling companies provide their services efficiently and at a competitive price. The regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Customs and Border Protection process the cargo paperwork in a timely manner and the FAA works diligently to ensure the aircraft get in and out of the airport with minimal delays in the air or on the ground.”

The aviation industry statewide provides 10 percent of all jobs and is eight percent of Alaska’s Gross State Product.
