Lufthansa Selects GPS Receiver for A340 and B747 Retrofit

July 19th, 2010 ~ No Comments

Farnborough International Airshow – Esterline CMC Electronics’ IntegriFlight™ CMA-5024 Global Positioning System Landing System Sensor has been selected by Lufthansa Airlines for the retrofit of eleven A340 and six B747 aircraft.

Replacement of the first-generation GPS receivers previously used on these aircraft with the CMA-5024, will allow Lufthansa to operate these aircraft in compliance with new Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast airspace requirements, such as those in force over vast areas of northern Canada. Approved as a primary means of navigation worldwide, the benefits of the CMA-5024 for Lufthansa will grow even further as ADS-B operations spread throughout the world.

Matthias Groth, Lufthansa’s project manager, said, “Being compatible with the latest air-transport “ARINC-743B” standard for such equipment, the Esterline CMC Electronics CMA-5024 is a GPS solution that is truly optimized for ease of retrofit on our fleet, given its “form-fit” commonality with our earlier generation ARINC-743/743A equipment”.

The CMA-5024 is CMC’s most advanced air transport grade GPS receiver. Its unmatched reliability is based on the pedigree of over 20,000 CMC GPS receivers that have entered into demanding aviation service over the last 15 years. The CMA-5024 solution is certified for operation with the Space Based Augmentation System, also known as the Wide Area Augmentation System in the U.S. and the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service soon to be introduced in Europe. CMC’s solution supports aircraft operations to the tightest navigation standards of RNP0.1 as well as GPS-based precision approach operations known as “LPV” or Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance.

Jean-Michel Comtois, CMC vice president, marketing and sales, government and public affairs, said, “CMC has a significant market share for aviation GPS receivers in the air transport, business/regional aircraft and helicopter markets. This selection by Lufthansa is excellent news and reconfirms our position as technology leader for high-integrity aviation GPS technology and products.“
