Kirby Lake Plane Crash Kills One

KIRBY LAKE, AB – Transportation Safety Board Investigators are on the scene of yesterdays plane crash in Kirby Lake Alberta.

A spokesperson for the TSB said that at approximately 11:20 am local time yesterday, a King Air 100, with eight passengers and two crew, crashed approximately 1.5 NM southwest of the Kirby Lake Airport.

One person was killed and three passengers were seriously injured and were transported to hospitals in Edmonton and Fort McMurray.

The aircraft, operated by Kenn Borek Air Ltd., had departed the Edmonton City Centre Airport on a flight to the Kirby Lake Airport to ferry a work crew to a natural gas project.

Capt. Keith Hoey from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Trenton Ontario said that at 11:20 am local time an Emergency Locator Transmitter Signal that was activated in the vicinity of the Kirby Lake Airport alerted them to the crash.

One Hercules from Winnipeg, a Griffon Helicopter from Cold Lake Alberta as well as a STARS Air Ambulance were sent to the crash site but were called off when the crash site was located at 11:29 am.

Kenn Borek Air is based in Calgary Alberta and operates regional passenger, cargo services, and charters aircraft for scientific expeditions, oil exploration, and air ambulance services.
