Harris Corporation Opens Expanded CF-18 Support Facility in Calgary

January 31st, 2011 ~ No Comments

CALGARY, ALBERTA – Harris Canada Inc. has officially opened its Calgary, Alberta avionics operation, following a $2.3 million investment to enhance the facility. The Harris facility supports the work to be completed under the company’s six-year, $273 million services contract with the Government of Canada for the CF-18 Avionics Optimized Weapon System Support program.

The Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, the Honourable Laurie Hawn, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence, and Alderman John Mar, Deputy Mayor of Calgary joined senior management from Harris at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the 6727 9th Street N.E. facility.

At 36,700 square feet, the facility is now 35 percent larger — providing a secure lab for testing classified equipment, a significantly larger warehouse complete with a shipping and receiving dock, a reception area, and space to support planned growth. In addition to the refurbishment, Harris invested more than $1 million in a fully-integrated software suite to provide supply chain management, production control, and configuration management solutions to deliver advanced support to the CF-18 Avionics program. Harris employs 40 people at the Calgary location and utilizes more than 40 vendors in Canada and the U.S.

“This investment demonstrates Harris’ long-term commitment to the region and in supporting highly skilled jobs in the Canadian aerospace industry,” said Dan Pearson, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Harris. “As steadfast partners, we deliver top-quality support services for the avionics systems on-board Canada’s CF-18 fighter-aircraft fleet, and are dedicated to assuring the CF-18’s success through its life expectancy.”

Harris has had a presence in Canada since 1964 with twelve locations in four provinces — Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec — and more than 600 employees. The company’s operations serve customers spanning the Defense, Law Enforcement, Municipal, Energy, Broadcast, Sports, Specialty Media, Satellite, Cable and Telco markets.

The Calgary facility is an ISO 9001:2008 and AS9100 accredited airworthiness organization.
