Lost Aircraft Lands Safely at Prince George Airport

November 23rd, 2012 ~ No Comments

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – There were a few tense moments at the Prince George Airport yesterday afternoon as a student pilot lost his way in deteriorating weather.

As authorities attempted to locate the aircraft and guide him to the airport, the Prince George Fire Department and BC Ambulance Service were standing by ready to assist if needed and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre was notified.
“Both a Buffalo and Cormorant were tasked to assist if necessary, but while they were en route, the student pilot, with the help of the instructor, was able to land the aircraft” said Captain Trevor Reid, spokesperson for 19 wing Comox.

During the incident, the airspace around the Prince George Airport was closed, causing some delays including a Westjet flight which diverted back to Vancouver. Westjet spokesperson Robert Palmer said “The flight was unable to land due to poor runway conditions at YXS. The uncertainty surrounding the location of the other aircraft was not the reason for the turn back.”

Thankfully with the wayward aircraft safely on the ground, the airspace was reopened and the Prince George Airport returned to normal operations.
