PEMBERTON, BC – Whistler RCMP are on scene at Nairn Falls provincial campground investigating a collision between two aircraft just south of Pemberton. “We received multiple calls of a mid-air collision at approximately 1220hrs today,” advised Sgt. Knapton, Operations NCO at Whistler RCMP.
“Officers from both our Whistler and Pemberton offices attended immediately and learned that a collision had occurred between a small Cessna and a powered glider.” As a result of the collision both planes crashed with debris being deposited over the campsite. “I understand that that campsite has over 90 units and was full at the time of this incident,” stated Sgt. Knapton, “luckily no one was struck by the debris, although I understand that some debris fell within 20’ of some guests.”
Investigators searched the scene along with Pemberton Search and Rescue and Pemberton Fire Department for survivors. During their search 4 deceased were located along with a dog. “The Cessna was from 100 Mile House, B.C. with two occupants, one male and one female, with a dog on board,” advised Sgt. KNAPTON.
Next of Kin has been notified however names are not being released at this time. The glider was based out of Pemberton with two occupants.
Whistler RCMP are continuing to investigate along with the Transportation Safety Board and the BC Coroners Service.
