KODIAK, Alaska – Coast Guard aircrews from Air Station Kodiak are responding to a report of a plane crash near Sand Point on the Alaska Peninsula early Friday morning.

Sand Point Fire Department rescue responders and good Samaritans report debris in the water on scene but no people have been sighted.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard District 17 command center received a report of a downed aircraft in the vicinity of Sand Point from the Sand Point police at approximately 12:20 a.m.

The Coast Guard issued an urgent marine information broadcast requesting the assistance of any mariners in the area and launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and crew and an HC-130 airplane and crew from Air Station Kodiak at approximately 12:24 a.m.

The HC-130 crew arrived on scene at about 2:24 a.m. and began a search. The helicopter crew arrived about one hour later. Both crews are actively searching for any survivors of the crash.

The aircraft is reportedly a Beechcraft 1900. There were two people on the aircraft. The circumstances surrounding the crash are unknown.
