Esterline CMC Electronics Supplies HUD and FMS for Pilatus PC-21 Fleet

February 2nd, 2010 ~ No Comments

Singapore Airshow Esterline CMC Electronics (CMC) has been awarded a contract by Pilatus Aircraft Ltd. to supply its head-up display (HUD) subsystem and latest generation flight management system (FMS) for the fleet of 25 PC-21 turboprop training aircraft selected by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Air Force and Air Defence.

The HUD subsystem includes CMC’s SparrowHawk HUD integrated with a HUD symbol generator and a video display unit. The SparrowHawk is a compact, 25º total field of view HUD that can display both raster video and stroke symbology. Its unique lens systems and high-performance combiners provide symbol brightness up to 3,000 ft. The HUD symbol generator features the latest compact PCI/PMC architecture and a powerful PC processor. The HUD subsystem’s software provides all standard HUD symbology with selectable formats (tapes or dials) for airspeed and altitude. The software also provides simulated weapons modes, allowing an early introduction to mission execution and tactics.

The CMA-9000 is a family of compact FMS variants that is well suited for modern digital cockpits in fixed and rotary wing aircraft for both civil and military applications. It is the next-generation FMS derived from CMC’s successful CMA-900 FMS/GPS and CMA-3000 helicopter FMS. The single unit CMA-9000 is civil certified for multi-sensor (GPS, INS, DME and EGI) navigation capabilities.

The company’s FMS systems are in service with over 60 airlines and military operators. ATI has selected the CMA-9000 to retrofit their Beluga A300-600ST fleet; Thales has selected the CMA-9000 for its avionics suite on the Sukhoi SuperJet 100. CMC’s FMS products have been installed and integrated on a number of C-130 aircraft worldwide. They also have been selected for a variety of avionics and fleet upgrades, including the Swiss Army Super Puma Mark I fleet, the Bavarian Police and German Army EC-135 training helicopters, France’s Sécurité Civile EC-145s, the French Air Force’s EC-725 combat SAR helicopters, the Czech Air Force’s Mi-171S transport helicopters and an international AS-332 Super Puma helicopter fleet.

CMC’s CMA-9000 FMS was chosen by Pilatus as a standard fit for the PC-21 in 2004. CMC’s HUD subsystem has been standard fit for the Pilatus PC-21 and PC-9 M and optional fit for the PC-9 and PC-7 MkII.

Pilatus Aircraft Ltd. was founded in 1939 and is currently world market leader in the manufacture and sale of single-engine turboprop aircraft. It is the only Swiss company that develops and produces private and training aircraft. At its headquarters in Stans, Switzerland, Pilatus is licensed to maintain and perform upgrades on a variety of aircraft. This service is complemented by three independent subsidiaries in Altenrhein (Switzerland), Broomfield (Colorado, USA) and Adelaide (Australia).
